Newsletter 2 - Medical Practice, Is It A Business?

Most physicians coming out of their residency or fellowship are looking to work their craft and help people get better.  The thoughts of having a profitable business is secondary.  If patients come I will make money is a common thought and it is partially correct.  The main point being, how can I get those patients to see me over my competition.

A successful medical practice involves many different quadrants firing at the same time.

  1. Having a good billing system in place that captures outstanding bills and errors in billing.

  2. The front desk and check out staff are courteous, friendly and make patients feel welcome.

  3. An updated modern waiting room. This is something patients are expecting now.

  4. Ability to make appointments online, having a patient portal for records and bill pay.

  5. Offering next day appointments or at the minimum same week appointments.

  6. A website that is easily navigated and offers all information without needed click throughs.

  7. Contracting with all insurance companies including Medicare and Medicaid.

  8. Marketing plan, emails to patients about the practice-what’s new. Visiting referral base to maintain a working relationship or partnership in patient care.

  9. Answering the phone with a live person.

  10. Ensuring the Google listings are complete.

Some of the above quadrants are basic jobs that must be performed to run the practice, but there are small ways to improve the patient experience that can add on new patients every month.

Today’s patients are tech savvy, informed and have higher expectations than 25 years ago.  This is why it is important for physicians to take a hard look at their practice and find ways to improve and yes market your practice.  Addressing the ways to improve your practice, doesn’t need to be lavish or expensive.  There are many companies out there that can solve your needs without breaking the bank.

Create goals for your practice over the next year. Each quarter select one area or two to improve.  First and foremost, make sure your staff is pleasant and helpful.  This goes a long way in maintaining your patient base.  There are courses your staff can take or have someone come into the office for a training session.  The other important thing is making sure your Google listings are up to date and have correct information.
